As many moms do, I had the goal of exclusively breastfeeding my son and I was devastated when I was unable to make enough milk. I had multiple lactation consultants tell me I was trying my best but received very little guidance on how to actually try to move the needle for my milk supply. Since I was getting nowhere despite devoting my entire focus on increasing my supply, I tried researching low supply as much as I could.
I found a God-send lactation consultant who was an expert in low milk supply and I finally felt like I had someone on my team who could help me and not just patronize me. She was amazing and did everything she could to help me combat my struggles. I wish I had found her sooner!
I learned I had primary and secondary issues impacting my supply. I received sabotaging breastfeeding management advice early on, my son had a sneaky tongue tie, labor medications and extraction tools had negatively impacted my son’s ability to feed and had made me so swollen, I had an unhealthy pregnancy, and I’m currently looking into the possibility of insulin resistance. No one warned me at any point that any of these things can make a difference and affect supply issues. And this is only a fraction of possible causes that can cause low milk supply.
The lack of support and poor information I received has made me want to share the knowledge I’ve learned with other moms. I can help you understand the causes of low milk supply and how you can still navigate breastfeeding in order to save you time, frustration, and unanswered questions because I’ve been there and tried all of it. I believe breastfeeding is supposed to be a “journey,” not an “odyssey.”
